Description :
I am in need of a data replication solution that works for many different environments. Windows, Linux and Virtual all apply.
Basically, I am creating an inexpensive disaster recovery solution for small and medium businesses. At a central location, I will have servers and storage running VMware, referred to as the Target Environment.
Small and Medium sized businesses will have their production environments at their site or data center. These environments could be windows or linux, they could be all physical, or some virtual. Their environment will be referred to as the Source Environment. They could have Direct Attached storage, or they could have a small SAN, like an iSCSI or NAS box.
The Source Environment needs to replicate all of their critical data to the Target environment. In the event of a disaster, there environment would be brought on line at the Target environment, and they would connect via VPN.
I need an inexpensive replication solution created that can either replicate at the host level, or at the Disk level. As discussed above, the solution(s) needs to be able to work across multiple environments. If the solution is host based, it needs to run in Linux and Windows, and can be reliable enough to replicate all of the changed data.
If the replication solution is disk based, it just needs to be able to work across different types of storage devices, different manufacturers and types (NAS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, etc.).
Lastly, the solution needs to be able to work in two environments:
Physical (Source) to virtual (target)
Virtual (Source) to Virtual (Target) environment.
All selected Source data, Operating system snapshopts, files and databases, needs to be replicated to the Target.
Please advise. A custom developed solution would be welcome as well, reliability needs to be proven though.
